The Miller Three-Pronged Obscenity Test
The Miller test was developed in the 1973 case Miller v. California. It has three parts:
- Whether “the average person, applying contemporary community standards”, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,
- Whether the work depicts/describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable state law,
- Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.
I forgot all about this tidbit from AP Government. Can anybody really claim to be the authority on whether something has “serious artistic value” or not? Hmm.

today I am actually not simply screwing around on flickr. I’m looking for still life composition ideas.

today was critique day in my drawing class. we typically go through everyone’s drawings one by one and discuss them after each artist says a few words about his or her piece. at one point, we got to what seemed to be essentially a million scribbles and a stick figure dog standing on a cabbage. a very unfortunate-looking girl in my class jumped up:
“OKAY soo this one’s mine. this is supposed to depict Artemis gazing longingly into the distance at the moon and this deer, which are both her symbols.”
the assignment was to draw a still life.

another hobby to take up when I get old: egg sculpture.

I sat outside in the sun and whittled myself a pen out of bamboo. Once again, living the dream, people.

I think I did pretty well today in my drawing class.
my teacher looked at my work and told me that it was “almost art,” which is a big step up from “everything leans a little to the left,” or my favorite “hmm, what happened here?”
